Batch Rename Photos by EXIF Data — Date, Camera Model, GPS, Lens, and Any Field

Every photo stores 20+ metadata fields inside its EXIF — capture date, camera model, GPS coordinates, ISO, lens name. Renomee reads them all. You describe the filename in plain English.

What is EXIF-based photo renaming?

EXIF-based photo renaming reads metadata stored inside the photo file by the camera at capture — including DateTimeOriginal, camera model, GPS coordinates, ISO, aperture, and lens — and uses those fields to build a meaningful filename. Unlike renaming by file date (which resets on copy), EXIF fields never change.

Available EXIF Fields

Renomee can read any of these fields and combine them into a single filename. Just describe what you want — no variable syntax to learn.

When DSC_0001 fails you

📸
Two cameras, one shoot — no way to tell them apart

You shot an event with a Canon R5 and a backup Sony. Now 800 files are mixed together: DSC_0001, IMG_3847, DSC_0002… The names are meaningless. EXIF camera model in the filename sorts them instantly — no manual work.

✈️
Copied travel photos — every date says today

File modification date resets on every copy or transfer. Your 500 Tokyo photos all show today's date. EXIF DateTimeOriginal records the actual moment the shutter fired — and never changes, no matter how many times you copy the file.

🔬
Lens test: 50 files, all named test.jpg

You compared three lenses at five apertures. Every file is test.jpg. To find the f/1.2 shots, you open files one by one. With EXIF renaming, the lens model, aperture, and ISO are in every filename before you even start comparing.

How it works — 3 steps

1
📂
Drop in your photo folder

Drag JPG, HEIC, or RAW files into Renomee. Subfolders are scanned automatically. Mixed formats work in one pass.

2
💬
Describe the rule in plain English

Type a natural language instruction. Renomee reads all EXIF fields from every file and builds names per your description. No variables to memorize.

3
Preview → Apply → Undo

Every proposed filename is shown before anything changes. Confirm to rename. One-click undo restores the original names instantly.

Renomee vs PowerRename vs ExifTool

All three tools can read EXIF date. The differences show up at GPS lookups, multi-field combinations, and multi-camera merges.

CapabilityRenomeePowerRenameExifTool CLI
Read EXIF date
Read camera model
Read GPS coordinates
GPS → city name lookup
Free multi-field combination⚠️ Limited✅ (requires command)
Fallback when EXIF missing⚠️ Script needed
Multi-camera time-merge
Preview + undo✅ Preview
No command / variable syntax
HEIC / RAW mixed batch⚠️ Partial

💡 ExifTool is powerful but requires learning its tag syntax. PowerRename supports basic EXIF date patterns but cannot do multi-field combinations or GPS lookups. Renomee covers all three without any syntax.

Who uses EXIF renaming

💍
Wedding photographers

Primary + secondary camera, 800 photos total. Merge and sort all by EXIF capture time, rename Wedding_001 through Wedding_847 in one pass.

✈️
Travel photography

Group by GPS city name automatically. Every photo in Tokyo gets Tokyo_ prefix, every photo in Kyoto gets Kyoto_ — no manual sorting.

🔬
Lens testing

Filename includes lens model, focal length, ISO, and aperture. Compare shot_RF-50mm_f1.2_ISO800 vs shot_RF-85mm_f1.4_ISO1600 side by side.

🏠
Real estate photography

Batch by shoot date + camera. Deliver 2024-03-15_Canon-R5_001 to client — every file date and camera origin is clear without opening it.

FAQ — EXIF photo renaming

Does EXIF renaming change or damage the photo file?
No. Renomee only changes the filename. The image data, EXIF metadata, GPS coordinates, and all embedded information inside the file remain completely untouched. The file size does not change.
What if a photo has no EXIF data?
Renomee falls back to the file creation date and appends a _NO-EXIF flag to the filename so you can identify those files. No photo is skipped silently — every file gets a new name.
Does Renomee support RAW photo files?
Yes. CR2 (Canon), NEF (Nikon), ARW (Sony), and DNG files are fully supported. EXIF fields are read the same way as JPG and HEIC — no conversion needed.
How many photos can I rename at once?
Renomee has been tested with 5,000+ files in a single batch. Processing 500 photos with EXIF date and camera model typically takes under 10 seconds on a mid-range Windows PC.
Is GPS data safe? Does it leave my device?
All EXIF reading, GPS city lookup, and filename processing happens entirely on your device. No photos, metadata, or GPS coordinates are sent to any server.
